RED studio (5+6)User research + Summary

Bo Lan

Hello everyone, last week I clarified my three design stages, namely product design, interior design and community design. I started the preliminary research of product design.

The first thing you see is the questionnaire I set up. In this questionnaire, I set a total of 14 questions.

My main questionnaire population is parents who have given birth in China.

I sent out 600 questionnaire invitations in total, and finally got 547 valid questionnaires. The average time to answer the questionnaire was 2 minutes and 30 seconds.

The figure below shows the geographical distribution of questionnaires. As a whole, we can see that the questionnaire covers every region of China. The following is a detailed data report.

In this picture are the results of the questionnaire for parents.

Of the 547 questionnaires, 54% were women and 45% were men.

Among them, the highest number in the questionnaire population is the 35-45-year-old parents, accounting for 37% of the total number.

And I have conducted a survey on the living standards and wages of my parents, and I can see that the average wages of most parents are in the range of £570 to £1,000 per month.

I can draw a conclusion from this, that is, I can focus the product on the 25~45-year-old parents who are the target of my product.

It can be seen from the second picture that it is a survey of the respondent's children.

The proportion of children aged 5 to 10 is 16%, and the proportion of children aged 11 to 16 is the highest, reaching a peak of 44%. Among them, the proportion of boys and girls is relatively average, 48% and 51% respectively. This is our next step. Questionnaire questions provide more effective and fair and objective conditions.

Revolving around the problem of the sense of boundary I mentioned before, I put forward a questionnaire-at what age do you think children and parents should sleep separately.

Most parents choose to sleep separately with their children and parents after the age of 6, which is very different from the data of other ages. We can infer that most children live in the same room with their parents before the age of 6.

Since my next product design direction is bed and table, I will consider discussing this phenomenon in stages. For example, the product before the age of 6 should also consider the use of parents, and the cultivation of children's independence should be considered after the age of 6 .

The next two questions respectively explain how often do parents change tables and chairs for their children? And on the premise of safety, health and hygiene, will parents let their children use second-hand furniture? We can see from the chart that most parents will let their children not change their desks for more than two years. And more than 60% of parents believe that they accept children's use of clean and sanitary second-hand products

Then I did a questionnaire on children's furniture in the current market.

What do you think are the problems with the children's furniture you are buying now? The focus of most of the parents’ concerns is that the child’s growth rate is too fast, and the furniture soon no longer fits the size of the child. And the difference between children's furniture and adult furniture is not that big.

Then I investigated their preferences, and more than 160 parents preferred wood furniture, followed by soft materials and simple shapes of children's furniture.

We further asked the parents. When they were buying furniture, they were more concerned about the characteristics of children's furniture. Among them, the most frequent keywords were "color" and "famous brand". From the color, we can further infer , Parents hope from the heart that children's furniture is different from adult furniture. Maybe it is from another aspect that wants to cultivate the child's innocence.

The second-ranked keyword is “famous brand”. From this data, we can see that parents still have certain concerns about children’s products in the current market. They are willing to prefer more well-known brands to ensure better workmanship and better workmanship. good quality.

From these two pictures, we can see that in the multiple-choice questions about functions in the left picture, more than 300 parents chose "flexible, variable and multifunctional" and "recyclable".

So I consider incorporating modular design and sustainable materials into the next children's product design as my design focus.

It can be seen from the picture on the right that parents have a preference for the materials of children's furniture.

We can see that the highest ranking is fabric and soft materials, the second is plastic, the third is board, and the fourth is bamboo and rattan furniture. This will also affect my future product design materials. Bring some inspiration.

The last picture is my last question. I asked the parents from the perspective of space. What percentage of the space in the children’s room do they think children’s furniture should take up?

50% of parents believe that children's furniture should occupy 30% of the children's living space, leaving a lot of space for children's activities.

40% of parents believe that children's furniture can account for 50% of children's space, and only a few parents believe that children's space can account for 70% of children's space.

From this data, we can also see that parents are extremely concerned about their children having a more comfortable and spacious living environment. So I will consider adding the foldability and variability of children's furniture in the future design.

Next, I conducted more in-depth interviews with the two survey subjects, and summarized the goals, desires, pain points, and mental journeys since raising their children.

These are two personas and the last CJMs.
