week13-Sound Art Performance

Bo Lan

The assignment for the special topic required 200 words, but I had more than enough to say, so I'm sharing my REFLECTIONS here.

Differences

In both of CM's works, the performance is performed through the use of sound as the main medium. However, the difference between the two pieces is that in the first piece, BLACK VOX, the CM performs the entire performance through a transducer placed on the bottom plane as its performance tool in conjunction with the CM's own hand movements. As far as I can see, it is the hand and the sensor that are used as the sound output. The data received is processed by the distance and the shape and area of the hand recognised by the sensor, and the final output is a modulated sound. The whole performance seemed to me to be very dramatic. The visual focus is on the movement of the hands, and the hands as flexible body parts can show a great deal of dramatic tension. Through the changes in height, distance and gesture of the hands, the sound changes as well.

In his second work, MODULATIONS, CM chooses a new form of expression as he stands in front of a projected wall. As the image changes, he moves into the centre of the screen and begins to perform. Throughout the process I can see that he is wearing a pair of sensor gloves on his hands. The visualisation behind him changes shape as the hand changes, as well as the sound. The CM's movement controls both the image and the sound. Unlike the first work, in this piece he uses wearable sensors to enrich the performance. Without the constraints of a field and wires, his movements become more watchable with the wireless sensor gloves. In my opinion this piece is more complete and more watchable than the first one.

I also personally preferred the second piece because the sound effects in the second piece were also full of emotional and rhythmic ups and downs, and the whole sequence was very aesthetically and artistically choreographed. I could see his inner monologue in his piece. Although there were no words throughout the piece, I could hear the emotions he was trying to express. The frontal projection of the projector also allowed for a clear shadow to be formed behind him, a shadow that worked very interestingly with the image.

Similarities

I think they also have something in common.

1, they both use sound as the main form of expression.

2, The sound sensor can be seen in both pieces. I was thinking about the relevance of the stage and the backstage in relation to what the teacher had said in week 2, and I think that by showing the technical aspects of this in the video, it would make the audience appreciate the computer art more.

3, Both pieces have a very rich physical presence.

4, 4 The facial expressions in both pieces are more serious and dignified during the performance, which also allows people to focus more on the form and sound of the performance.

Theatrical Trajectory

The theatrical trajectory in the first piece is, I believe, the movement of the hands. In detail, the opening is formed by one hand touching the sensor, and then within a few seconds the other hand quickly entwines and performs with the first hand, making the performance official. Afterwards more wrist and elbow parts are combined from the hand, allowing for a more varied sound. The sound goes from intense to calm to tentative to intense and then to an abrupt end. I think his theatrical trajectory is flowing.

The theatrical trajectory in the 2nd piece is, I think, more varied, with the piece going through several quiet and intense moments. His performance starts with just images, and as the images flicker and the sounds come to him he finally enters the images and performs. Midway through the performance he is very physical, and although there are only gloves, his whole body is dancing, so it is theatrical talk that is very intense. But at the end of the scene he calms down and stops moving his body and covers his eyes with his gloves to end the play.

Combined with Goffman-Interaction Ritual P5-P15

I think that Goffman's ideas are reflected in this work.

In the first piece, for example, I experienced a figurative representation of social status in the interaction between the two hands in the first piece. The higher and lower the two hands make different sounds, the closer the hands are to the sensor symbolising less discourse and a quieter sound, however as the hands are raised in height the sound becomes louder. To me this seems to confirm the embodiment of status voice in society. As the two hands become entangled with each other, the voice becomes louder, as if the negative influences of argument and shame create a lot of noise when the social rules of face are not maintained. When the two hands are calm and in the same position, the sound tends to moderate again.

The second piece incorporates Goffman's ideas, and I think he can be read as the inner monologue of a man who has long worn a mask to save face. I can tell from his performance in person that his expression is serious. His shadow has no facial expression and blends into the background image, which I can interpret as a performance of his true inner self, unencumbered by the rules of society, working with light and shadow
